Steven Berghuis back in the squad for Chelsea game

Steven Berghuis has been rewarded for his goalscoring performance for the under-21 side in midweek with a place in the squad for the game with Chelsea this afternoon.

Berghuis, who turned 24 last Saturday, scored from close range for Harry Kewell’s side on Monday in the 2-1 defeat at Bristol City in the Professional Development League match. He played the full 90 minutes and, combined with his performance in training, has done enough to make the bench at Stamford Bridge.

Asked if Berghuis asked to play in the u21s or if he was invited to, Sanchez Flores said: “Both. I like that the players [are prepared] to give one step more. Steven wants to be competitive and play in any match.”

Sanchez Flores has, of late, preferred to call upon Berghuis for away matches, naming him in the squad for trips to Aston Villa and Sunderland but leaving him out for the home games with Manchester United, Norwich City and Liverpool.

It was, ironically, the coach of today’s opposition, Guus Hiddink, who called Berghuis up to the Holland squad for the first time in May, naming him in the 30-man party ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifier in Latvia.
