Watford will face Newcastle United in successive home matches in January after they drew the Magpies in the third round of the FA Cup.
Drawn first out the hat as ball No 41 by former Luton Town striker John Hartson, the Hornets will be pitched against Steve McClaren’s side who they beat, 2-1, at St James’ Park in September. The tie will be played between January 8 and January 11, with the two teams scheduled to play a Premier League game at Vicarage Road on Saturday, January 23rd.
Newcastle have been knocked out at the third-round stage in each of the last three seasons and have not been beyond the fourth round in ten years. Watford will receive £67,500 in prize money should they win the tie.
The tie will be the first time the sides have met in the FA Cup since 1989 when it needed three replays, in the space of eight days, before Watford eventually prevailed, 1-0, after extra time in front of a home crowd of 24,065.
Ben Watson has the fondest memories of the FA Cup having scored the winner for Wigan Athletic against Manchester City in 2013.
