Alessandro Diamanti left out of squad for Man City clash

Alessandro Diamanti has not made the squad for the game with Manchester City, fuelling speculation he will return to Italy this month in a bid to revive his career.

Quique Sanchez Flores today named 19 players for the game with Manuel Pellegrini’s side and will cut one name tomorrow when he names his matchday squad of 18. Diamanti has been in all but one of the matchday squads since he joined on loan from Guangzhou Evergrande, failing to make the cut only against Arsenal, but he will not be involved tomorrow. Victor Ibarbo has also been left out of the squad for a sixth successive match.

Sanchez Flores said on Thursday everybody was fully fit so Diamanti’s exclusion could signal he is about to end his unsuccessful spell at Vicarage Road and return to Serie A. Sampdoria and Liverno are reportedly leading the chase for the 32-year-old forward who still has ambitions of making Italy’s Euro 2016 squad.

The head coach is an admirer of the left-footed Italian and has no issue with his performances in training or his attitude, but he has not found a way of integrating him into his side. He’s played just 65 minutes of Premier League action this season, although he did score the winner in a friendly with Fulham.

“He’s a very clever player,” said Sanchez Flores yesterday. “But he is completely different to the strikers we are managing. Only when we played against Everton did we play with one just behind the striker, in Jurado. The rest of the matches we always play with two strikers. It’s very difficult to play in their position. Only one player has played in this position and that’s Jurado. I was talking with Diamanti. He is training well, he is ready but at this moment he is not coming in the team.”
