Alessandro Diamanti tying up loose ends on Watford departure

Alessandro Diamanti is on the verge of completing a move away from Vicarage Road and ending a disappointing loan spell with the Hornets.

The Italy international is tying up the loose ends on a move to Atalanta until the end of the campaign as he bids to revive his season and resurrect his outside chance of making the Azzurri’s squad for Euro 2016.

Signed in August as the experienced forward with Premier League know-how the club were looking for before they knew just how potent Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo would be, Diamanti has barely had a look in and does not really fit into the system Quique Sanchez Flores has settled on. He is not suited to the all-action slightly deeper role occupied by Deeney, the club captain, nor is he capable of leading the line like the free-scoring Ighalo. Whereas Jose Manuel Jurado, a natural No.10, has been accommodated out wide, Diamanti has not managed to force his way into the starting XI and hasn’t been seen since coming on as a 76th-minute substitute against Leicester City.

Diamanti, 32, has not given Sanchez Flores a moment’s bother and is regularly one of the most impressive performers in training. He will be allowed to leave with the blessing of the head coach.

Diamanti joined Watford on a season-long loan from Guangzhou Evergrande. That deal remains in tact. Under the terms of Fifa’s rules on the transfer and status of players, Watford can transfer him to a third club with the written authorisation of the the Chinese club.

The exit of Diamanti will be a blow to his good friend Valon Behrami and the chief scout Filippo Giraldi, who has a long-standing relationship with the player. His departure does, however, free up an all-important foreign player spot in the Premier League squad.
