A youthful Watford squad, featuring the backbone of the Under-21 side who have played in the Professional Development team, are in India for a tournament endorsed by Ronaldinho.
Sean Murray, George Byers, Ashley Charles, new goalkeeper Luke Simpson and recent midfield recruit from Chesterfield Rhyle Ovenden are all in a party, led by Harry Kewell, who are heading to Kerela to play in The Sait Nagjee Trophy.
The eight-team tournament, featuring sides from Hertha BSC and TSV 1860 Munich, Levante UD and U23 teams from Argentina U23 team, Atletico Paranaense and Rapid Bucharest, starts Friday and finishes on February 21. The tournament has been resurrected after a gap of 21 years. Watford, according to the club’s official website, are scheduled to play Millwall in an U21 fixture on February 15.
“It is the first time that top European and Latin American clubs are coming to India for a tournament,” said Hifsu Rehman, chairman of sponsors Mondial Sports LLP. “We hope to revive the glorious football tradition of Kozhikode with this tournament. Ronaldinho will come here for the event. We hope to bring back the football glory of Kerala with this tournament.”
