Q&A with Troy Deeney…and those £4,700 trainers

Watford’s captain was in the talkSPORT studio yesterday for the three-hour Drive show with Adrian Durham and Darren Gough. Here is Deeney on:

SNAPCHAT…

“The young boys at Watford are on it all day. There is a new thing that zooms in on you and your face becomes a dog. I’m not the best looking guy in the world but I’ve never wanted to be a dog. Where does your privacy come in at any point? They just say everybody does it, they are like sheep and just follow everyone.”

MANNERS…

“Manners seem to have gone. I held the door open for someone today and you would have thought I was about to mug them. There was no thank you or nothing. A little bit inside of me, when they do that, has the tendency to want to trip them up or clip the back of their heels when they do that. We were in Dubai last week and a woman, who was pregnant and pushing a pushchair, got on the train from the airport. My missus let her sit down and another guy jumped in front and sat down. My missus is a bit more fiery than me and she made sure he got out of the seat and let her [the pregnant woman] sit down.”

BOXING…

“It’s obviously horrible and a horrible situation [what happened to Nick Blackwell]. No fighter wants to go in there thinking: ‘I’m going to end up in hospital.’ No news is good news so hopefully he’s recovering. It’s another indication of how dedicated these guys are and how they put it all on the line. If we are led to believe what Eubank Snr said then fair play. If he had carried on and taken a few more to the head it could have been a lot worse. I thought he came back from everything, his guard was up and he was always coming forward. Normally it’s an indication he’s OK. The Groves-Froch fight was arguably stopped too soon. I was there. One thing nobody has spoken about is the referee [from the Eubank-Blackwell fight]. He could be thinking: ‘Could I have done more? Should I have stopped it?’ And you know he’s watched it back. It’s tough but it [the sport of boxing] appeals to the inner cave man inside you. We all want to see someone get knocked out.”

UFC is thriving and at its all-time peak. Is that a reflection of where we are now as a society and where we get our kicks?

“No [I wouldn’t change anything about boxing]. The only one to compare [this incident with Blackwell] was the one in ’91 [Eubank-Watson] and how long ago was that? How many fights are happening with no-one getting hurt? As of right now, it’s a real sad situation but it’s been a long time since the last one. If he [Blackwell] wins with the last punch of the last round you think what a great game plan that was. We can all say the corner should have done this or done that but it was two lads who had a great fight and one of them has come out in a bad way.”

FIRST SPORTING IDOL…

“Ian Wright.”

WHEN YOU REALISED YOU WERE GOOD ENOUGH TO BE A PRO…

“Maybe three or four years ago. I thought I was alright but I always thought the wheels were bound to fall off at some point. I didn’t take it as seriously as I should and thought I can’t keep getting away with it or they’ll take me back to the job centre.”

LAST ALBUM…

“I just downloaded James Brown’s Greatest Hits.”

MOST OUTRAGEOUS PURCHASE…

“I spent £4,700 on a pair of trainers. I’m an idiot but oh well. I haven’t worn them. I’m a bit of a trainers freak. I’ve got a kingsize bedroom full of them. I’ve got about 200 pairs. I tried to wear trainers on my wedding day but the missus wasn’t having it. Red Easy Octobers [are the trainers]. They were very difficult to get. I could have probably got them for £125 if you got them from Footlocker [before the limited edition sold out]. I’ve never worn them and would probably get more for them now.”

FIRST TIME YOU USED YOUR FAME…

“I’ve never used it. If people allow me to queue-jump then fine, but I’ve never asked for anything. I normally get given stuff.”

LAST TV SERIES…

“I’ve just watched The Jinx. If you watched Making A Murderer, it’s the flipside to that. It’s this billionaire guy and people just keep going missing around him.”

FIRST CONCERT…

“50 Cent’s first concert when I was 15 or 16.”

GREEDINESS OF IGHALO…

“He’s done so well. The only time I shouted at him or we had a discussion was when we were playing United away, the one where he broke down the right-hand side and got in behind and I’ve got a tap in. He decided to shoot and we lost the game 1-0. It wasn’t that he should have passed to me. It was that it was about him more than the team at that point.”

MORE GOALS…

“The gaffer has come out and said that in his press conferences. It’s definitely something we’re working on. It doesn’t matter who scores as long as we get the job done and stay up.”

FAMILY TIME…

“I was at my mum’s on Sunday. She brought us a KFC and we watched the old Disney film, we had Aladdin on for the kids and everyone helped themselves [to the KFC]. We had a family bucket and then it’s back to work on Monday.”

THE FOOTBALLERS WHO HAD TOO MANY AT CHELTENHAM…

“You’ve got to remember, I’m 27. If I was a normal 27-year-old I would still be going mad enough with my mates, but when you are 27 in football you are married with two kids. The aim [when you go to the races] is to win a few bets and get trollied. You do go there and act out of character. If that was a normal kid as a 22- or 23-year-old, would you have heard about that?”

VERDICT ON THE SEASON…

“So far, not too bad. Obviously the strike partnership got a lot of credit, but Gomes and Cathcart and Watson haven’t got the credit they have deserved. We’ve beaten the record in terms of previous [Watford Premier League] points and hopefully Odion will go on to get 20 goals in his first season in the Premier League.”

IGHALO SINGING HIS SONG ON TALKSPORT…

“It’s a good job he can play football.”

WHEN WERE YOU STARSTRUCK…

“I’ve got two. I met Didier Drogba at the NBA [in London] and he recognised me and he came over to speak to me. I thought: ‘You shouldn’t know who I am.’ Then I saw John Terry in Dubai. Both were top, top fellas.”

CLAIMS FROM CRYSTAL PALACE ABOUT THE LOAN SYSTEM…

“Ian Holloway did that to deflect the pressure onto us and was trying to say they’ve changed the law and all this and that.”

BEST DEFENDER YOU’VE PLAYED AGAINST…

“Robert Huth. Him and Wes Morgan are perfect as a partnership, they are a throwback to the days when defenders enjoyed defending and don’t mind getting hurt. They don’t try to be anything weird and wonderful. Both times I’ve found it tough against them. I would say Gabriel [too] but he nearly broke my leg. It’s all good fun. That was a little throwback to my Chelmsley Town days.”

LAST TIME OUT…

“We were terrible against Stoke – really, really bad. That or Southampton was our worst game this season.”

JOHN STONES…

“We played them first game of the season. He had the Chelsea offer and Mourinho coming out and saying he wanted him. We were up for it and I thought he conducted himself top, top drawer. He played really well and physically got involved. He came up against myself and I thought: ‘Yeah, I fancy that’. I try and hit someone the first time, just to let them know I’m about. Some of them go: ‘Oh, I don’t fancy that’ and pass me on to the other defender but he was like: ‘Ah. Nice shot’. He’s a young player that is very talented. I still think there is a place for JT [in the England team]. I know he’s not coming back but I think they could do with his experience. They [his partner] would be a better player [for it].”

ARSENAL…

“He [my son Myles] didn’t speak to me for the whole day [after we beat Arsenal in the FA Cup]. I gave him a Walcott shirt to soften the blow. He wasn’t interested in that. He was more interested in Arsenal going out. In my house I’m the 15th best footballer in the world. The pocket money starts again after Arsenal this weekend. He was the only guy in the box [at Vicarage Road] cheering when we lost 3-0 [in October].”

JOKING ABOUT PLAYING FOR WALES…

“I’ve got an auntie who lives in Rhyl so you never know.”

ADAM LALLANA…

“He offers a lot. He can take the game 20 yards up the field, he’s good with both feet. I can understand why people say that for someone of his ability you’d like to see more end product. When he was at Southampton I thought he was unbelievable. He still has to be in the squad but when you are at a team like Liverpool you have to add a bit more.”

WAYNE ROONEY…

“The only debate you can have is if he’s fit or not. He’s played 109 games and you can count a handful of those where he’s let you down. He’s one of very few players who can grab a game by the scruff of the neck. And it’s Jermain Defoe over Walcott all day long for me.”
