The clamour among Watford fans for Steven Berghuis to be given an extended run in the side gathered pace this evening after he had a hand in another goal for Holland.
Berghuis, 24, made just one start all season for Watford, in the FA Cup third-round tie with Newcastle United, but he has made two for his country in the last six days.
He created the assist for Vincent Janssen’s opener against Poland on Sunday and repeated the trick this evening against Austria; his deflected cross was converted from close range by Janssen, who became the first player to score three goals in his first five Holland games since Pierre van Hooijdonk in 1997.
Playing on the right of a front three, and given licence to cut in on his favourite left foot, Berghuis caused problems for the Austria defence, featuring Premier League winner Christian Fuchs, before being replaced just after the hour mark by Luciano Narsingh. Newcastle’s Georgino Wijnaldum made it two for the Dutch on 67 minutes.
Berghuis will now head off to continue his summer break, which was halted by a call from Holland coach Danny Blind while he was in New York, and will return to the London Colney training ground on July 3 to meet new Watford boss Walter Mazzarri. The fans are already looking forward to seeing more of the winger next season…
