Walter Mazzarri has sanctioned the decision to retain two Italian members of the club’s backroom staff, but Dean Austin has become the fourth member of Quique Sanchez Flores’ backroom staff to leave the Hornets as the ripple effect of the head coach losing his job continues.
Goalkeeping coach Paolo De Toffoi and head of sports science Gianni Brignardello have avoided the cull that inevitably comes with the change at the top. They have been told they will be kept on under Mazzarri, their fellow countryman.
Mazzarri is bringing nine staff with him when he officially starts work on July, with Nicolo Frustalupi set to be his number two. Mazzarri has taken his trusted trainer Giuseppe Pondrelli and goalkeeping coach Nunzio Papale with him to his last three jobs so if they, as expected, join him at Vicarage Road it will be fascinating to see where Toffoi and Brignardello fit in.
Sanchez Flores’ right-hand men Antonio Diaz Carlavilla and Alberto Giraldez, plus the video editor/analyst Cote, followed their boss out of the door so swiftly that they were not at the awards’ evening, but a decision was delayed on Austin, who provided continuity between the reigns of Slavisa Jokanovic and Sanchez Flores. He was told this week he is not required under Mazzarri, bringing an end to his 18 months at the club.
