Juan Carlos Paredes has not travelled to Austria and will miss out on the chance to impress Walter Mazzarri during their intense training camp.
The Ecuadorian right-back did not travel to Luton Airport and board the flight with the rest of the squad because of a visa problem. He also missed last season’s training camp in Germany. He will remain at home and no doubt train with Harry Kewell’s under-21 squad at the club’s training ground in Bell Lane with the likes of Sean Murray and Alex Jakubiak.
The news is a blow to Paredes’ hopes of landing a place in Mazzarri’s 25-man squad. Not only will he lose ground in fitness terms, he will also miss games against Union Berlin, on Tuesday, and Saturday’s game against Anzhi Makhachkala. Paredes was in the squad for the game at Stevenage but was an unused substitute. Watford already need to cut five foreign players from their squad and Paredes is one of those under threat. He has been linked with a move to Trabzonspor.
He will have definitely fallen further down the pecking order following the arrival of Juan Camilo Zuniga who joined up with his new teammates yesterday.
