Watford are being heavily linked with a double defensive swoop for Nicolas Lombaerts and Brice Dja Djedje.
The Hornets are keen to add one more central defender to their ranks, despite already having Miguel Britos, Craig Cathcart, Sebastian Prodl and Christian Kabasele on long-term contracts and Lombaerts, 31, fits the bill.
His agent was reportedly in London last week and there is talk Zenit St Petersburg are willing to listen to offers for a player contracted until the summer of 2018. Capped 39 times by his country, Lombaerts was cut from Belgium’s Euro 2016 squad as he failed prove his fitness following a torn thigh muscle. His place, ironically, was taken by Watford new boy Kabasele.
Less heralded is Djedje, the right-back from Marseille. L’Equipe are reporting Watford agreed a fee with the French giants of €4m including bonuses for the 25-year-old Ivory Coast-born player.
Watford still hold an interested in taking Calum Chambers on loan but it is hard to see that happening if they sign Lombaerts and Djedje. They are, however, no longer in the race to sign Jordan Lukaku.
