Watford are close to completing a deal to sign Daryl Janmaat from Newcastle in a club record move for a defender.
The Hornets have agreed a deal with Newcastle to sign the Holland international and met the player today to discuss personal terms. The transfer could be announced as early tomorrow if the 27-year-old accepts the package being offered by Watford and passes his two-part medical.
The fee, which is in the region of £9m with add-ons, would smash the previous high for a defender, eclipsing the £5.8m they paid Genk for Christian Kabasele. Newcastle have already prepared for life without Janmaat by signing DeAndre Yedlin for £5m.
The arrival of Janmaat would bolster the right-hand side of the team and throw into question the immediate future of Brice Dja Djedje, who has not played since he arrived from Marseille because of injury, and raise question marks over whether Walter Mazzarri has complete faith in Nordin Amrabat at right wing-back.
Janmaat scored against Watford at St James’ Park last season while Quique Sanchez Flores made special provisions for the marauding Dutchman in the games against the Magpies at Vicarage Road.
