Isaac Success is back in contention for selection but there is still no return date for fellow summer signing Brice Dja Djedje.
Success has been out injured with a hamstring problem he picked up in the final pre-season friendly against Lorient. The head coach revealed he trained with the group for the first time today after being discharged by Richard Collinge and his medical team.
“He’s an important player,” said the head coach. “He trained today, and tomorrow we will decide if he is ready to play.”
The head coach is excited about the prospect of unleashing Success who can be used to get Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo out of their comfort zone but also in an attacking triumvirate.
“Success is a player with a lot of potential and this can help Deeney and Ighalo to work harder, knowing that there is one other player in their position,” he said. “There is the possibility for all three of them to play together, if the team allows.”
It looks to be a while, however, before Dja Djedje is seen. The recruit from Marseille, signed for a reported £4m, is still out with a existing calf problem, making you wonder if indeed he passed a medical.
“He is injured,” said Mazzarri. “You’ll have to ask Richard [about how long he will be out.] He’s not available, that’s all I know. When they give him back to the group, and he’s on training on the pitch, then I will know when he is ready.”
