Walter Mazzarri says he retains full confidence in Odion Ighalo who is going through a lean spell in front of goal and looks out of sorts.
Last season’s top scorer has scored four times in his last 25 games, and one of those came against Gillingham. He was withdrawn before the hour mark last time out against Bournemouth and Isaac Success is pushing him hard for his spot.
“We have a lot of confidence in Ighalo,” said Mazzarri who revealed the forward only came back to training on Tuesday after attending a memorial service for his father. “There are periods when some are more in form than others but he’s a player we believe a lot in. It’s just a matter of him scoring.”
Ighalo’s link-up play and contribution outside of the box has always been questioned and it’s something brought into sharp focus when he’s not scoring.
“What I ask for my forwards is that they just play very well,” said Mazzarri. “What I always said to them is make sure they are 100 per cent ready physically, that they fight for every ball and they play well defensively. The goals will come but the most important thing is to be 100 per cent ready physically.”
