Walter Mazzarri is resigned to being without Isaac Success this weekend as the injuries continue to mount up for the Hornets.
The head coach dropped a bombshell this afternoon when he revealed the Nigerian, who has been in such fine form, has not trained all week because of a hamstring problem. Mazzarri very much came across as someone who was preparing the team without Success for the game at Swansea City.
“We need to check on him,” said Mazzarri. “He didn’t train the whole week and is a doubt for the game. He might not be available. I will make my decision on Saturday morning. When making the final decision, I don’t see how they played in the last game: I look at how they trained the whole week.”
The last comment would effectively rule out the forward, who was struggling in the closing stages of the 1-0 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside.
“After I substituted him, the physio was telling me during the game he was hurting,” said the head coach. “After the 90 minutes, and back in the dressing room, I had a look at him and the physio confirmed he could not train because of a muscle problem. He hasn’t been training regularly [all season] because of his muscle problems.”
Craig Cathcart is also still out and the word is the defender might require surgery to cure a groin and hip problem. Kenedy, who hasn’t trained for more than a week, is also in the treatment room.
On the plus side, Daryl Janmaat returned to training today for the first time since injuring his shoulder, but the game against Hull City is a more realistic target for the Dutchman. Mazzarri reported that Stefano Okaka “is very close” to returning while Miguel Britos is expected to shake off the problem that saw him substituted at the Riverside. Jerome Sinclair is also available for selection after recovering from a problem with his left hamstring. Brice Dja Djedje will, however, be out for “some time”, added Mazzarri.
