Prodl struggling for Anfield test while Okaka may need more time

Walter Mazzarri has confirmed Sebastian Prodl is all but ruled out of Sunday’s trip to Liverpool and that Stefano Okaka is unlikely to be risked.

Already without Craig Cathcart because of a hernia, the last thing Mazzarri needed was to see Prodl limp off before the end of the Hull game with a groin problem. The absence of the central defensive pair leaves Mazzarri needing to decide if Christian Kabasele or Adrian Mariappa will line up alongside Miguel Britos and Younes Kaboul or whether to switch to a conventional back four.

“Unfortunately Prodl has been added to the injury list,” said the head coach. “I don’t think that he will be able to be available for this weekend but we will see. On Sunday he had a muscle problem. It is not a worrying injury but it couldn’t be resolved in one week.”

Okaka has been out since the win over West Ham United with a hamstring strain, and the feeling is Mazzarri will use the international break to get the strapping Italian back to full fitness rather than rush him back to action and risk further injury.

“We will also try to get Okaka at the last minute but I don’t want to run the risk of him getting even more injured,” said Mazzarri. “We will decide last minute.”

Kenedy (knee) and Isaac Success (dead leg / hamstring) are still out.
