Daryl Janmaat and Adrian Mariappa have both been ruled out of this afternoon’s game at West Bromwich Albion, and possibly for an extended spell, after a sickening clash of heads in training, we can reveal.
Janmaat and Mariappa contested an aerial challenge during a session on Wednesday morning at the club’s London Colney training ground and both slumped to the floor. Janmaat sustained a cut to the face that was apparently so deep it penetrated facial muscles and required immediate surgery. One source said he was knocked unconscious.
Mariappa, who we are told also lost consciousness, suffered a deep laceration that required a significant amount of stitches but, just to compound matters, he also suffered damage to his knee as he landed. He is facing at least a month out.
The incident threw Walter Mazzarri’s plans into chaos as Janmaat was a certain starter at the Hawthorns while serious consideration was being given to starting Mariappa against Tony Pulis’ side, especially with Younes Kaboul ruled out. The luckless Mariappa has not started a Premier League game since May and was chomping at the bit to get some game time.
The injury to Janmaat is the second serious one he’s suffered this season, following so soon after he had recovered from a fractured shoulder he sustained against Manchester United.
