Watford are on the brink of announcing Tom Cleverley is joining the club from Everton, we can confirm.
Cleverely, 27, has been allowed to leave Everton following Morgan Schneiderlin’s arrival at Goodison and Watford have won the race for his signature. The England international was at London Colney yesterday to finalise talks and complete his medical, with the deal set to be announced today. The Hornets will have the option to make the deal permanent in the summer.
Cleverley spent the 2009-10 season on loan with Watford, who were then in the Championship, and won the Player of the Season award. His arrival will help boost Watford’s depleted midfield options. He will go straight into the squad to face Middlesbrough and given Adlene Guedioura is away and Valon Behrami is struggling with injury, he could even start against Aitor Karanka’s side. Watford had held talks with Henri Lansbury at the training ground earlier this month but feel Cleverley’s Premier League experience makes him a more attractive option.
Crucially, Cleverely is a home-grown player, and an established Premier League one at that, so his capture does not require any reconfiguring of the Premier League squad. Watford now have six home-grown players and can name a 23-man squad instead of the 22-man roster they submitted at the beginning of September.
